Although the new School Inspections Framework has yet to be published, there is a strong message coming from Ofsted with regards to extracurricular support for pupils and the need to ensure this is evidence based.
In a recent Ofsted presentation (June 2011) by the Principal Officer for Framework Development, the following were all stated:
Rate of improvement in the performance of disadvantaged groups remains slow and is too variable
In addition to knowledge acquisition, the curriculum provides a holistic approach to the development of skills, values and attitudes for 21st century living
Learning is supported in and out of school
One of the four key judgements is Behaviour and safety
The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils at the school as shown for example by their ... willingness to take part in a range of activities requiring social skills and are helped to develop these skills .... positive response to a range of artistic, sporting and other cultural opportunities provided by the school
